Our mission is to be enriched in helping build a stronger and better educated community, by providing scholarships to students who have earned through achievements and envision their participation in higher education.
2022 Scholarship Award Night
Thank you to everyone that joined our Scholarship Award night. We awarded Nine graduating high school students. Each awarded $1,000 in scholarships by the Bill de la Fuente Scholarship Foundation on June 15th, 2022. On this sixth annual awards night, the foundation’s leaders hosted a dinner, guest speakers, and a raffle before presenting the award winners with their prizes. These scholarships were all donations from our North County small businesses, friends and family.
Bill said, "Everyone wins in this endeavor, our local Small businesses become part of the solution in building an educated community. Students win because they not only receive funding but they also know they are being supported by the same community from which they came from. Students and Sponsors actually meet and know they are all one, interdependent community."
Our Small business sponsors are no strangers to challenges and know what it takes to get things accomplished. It is a true effort to say, "Let me give back and make a difference in the life of someone else." We do not raise funds from corporations or grants. It is important to us that it comes from these small business owners who want to make a difference and help their local communities.”
Each of the scholarship recipients are from high schools in Escondido, Oceanside, Vista, Carlsbad, Fallbrook and San Marcos and completed the AVID or Migrant Education curriculum, a set of classes dedicated to college preparedness. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination https://www.avid.org/
These speakers honored the scholarship recipients and offered their own stories and experiences as motivation. One such speaker was ESL Matriculation coordinator Carmelino Cruz, Who spoke to both the students as well as the parents on the dynamics of continued Education for both students and parents as well as the challenges that many students from low-income immigrant families face.
The Keynote speaker, Vista Schoolboard President, Cipriano Vargas was himself a Scholarship recipient almost 20 years ago. His eloquent and motivational presentation inspired everyone present, his topic being the Evolution of Education.
The funds awarded to these students will help them pay for the costly tuitions that Universities demand. It was out of this necessity that the Bill de la Fuente Scholarship foundation was formally established in 2017. Prior to the foundations formation, there was a very similar organization called the Comerciantes Latinos Asociados which was headed by Bill de la Fuente himself until his retirement in 2015. It was his retirement that inspired Claudia I. Tapia to create this new foundation in his honor and to continue his vision.
"Mr. Bill de la Fuente has been a personal mentor to me for many years,” said Tapia. “I think that one of the things that I really saw in him and his leadership was that he’s always had much integrity in what he represented, how he did it, and why. He was never someone who was swayed or influenced by finances or titles or any other source of vanity. He was always honest and truthful about wanting to make a difference in the lives of hardworking students that are to him and to all of us, the future.”
